Professor David Nutt: the neuroscientist behind SENTIA’s research into alcohol, GABA and the science of social drinking.
Professor David Nutt is a British neuropsychopharmacologist — a scientist who studies how drugs and brain chemistry affect thought, mood and behaviour.
He is the Edmond J. Safra Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London, where he has worked across alcohol, addiction, psychedelics, brain imaging and psychopharmacology. Before Imperial, he held posts at Oxford and Bristol and spent two years as Chief of the Section of Clinical Science at the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the National Institutes of Health.
Today, he is also co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of GABA Labs, the research company behind SENTIA. His connection to the brand is not simply that he knows a lot about drinks. It is that he has spent decades asking a much more interesting question:
What does alcohol do in the brain and which parts of that experience do people genuinely value?
Alcohol has been one of humanity’s most familiar ways of changing brain state for thousands of years.
People drink because alcohol does things they value. At lower doses, it can help people feel more relaxed, less inhibited and more socially at ease. GABA Labs’ peer-reviewed research argues that an important part of these early effects comes from alcohol enhancing GABA — the brain’s principal inhibitory neurotransmitter and one of its key regulatory systems.
Professor Nutt’s expertise matters because he has spent much of his scientific career studying exactly this territory: alcohol, GABA receptors, addiction and the way psychoactive compounds alter brain function. His early research included work on the GABA-benzodiazepine receptor system, while his period at the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism placed alcohol pharmacology directly at the centre of his work.
That history eventually led to the question behind SENTIA: Could you learn from what alcohol does well socially, identify part of the underlying mechanism, and find another way to approach it? That is the starting point for functional alcohol alternatives.
At lower blood-alcohol concentrations, Professor Nutt and colleagues describe alcohol’s relaxing and sociability-promoting effects as being linked in part to enhanced GABA activity. As alcohol levels rise, however, its pharmacology becomes much broader and begins affecting many other brain systems.
That distinction is central to the SENTIA idea. Alcohol solved a real human problem: social ease. The scientific opportunity is to understand why that works, then investigate whether plant-derived compounds can interact with some of the same useful biology without simply recreating everything ethanol does.
Professor Nutt had been publicly discussing the possibility of more selective alcohol alternatives long before SENTIA existed. In 2013, Imperial reported his work investigating compounds designed to reproduce some of alcohol’s desirable effects by targeting GABA receptors more selectively.
GABA Labs later developed that research programme further. Its 2022 peer-reviewed paper, Functional Alternatives to Alcohol, set out the scientific rationale: understand the desirable and undesirable effects of alcohol, identify the biological mechanisms involved, then investigate natural or synthetic compounds capable of approaching the former without reproducing the latter.
SENTIA emerged from that research direction. For Professor Nutt, the broader principle is consistent with much of his career: give people better information and better choices.
That applies to medicines. It applies to drug policy. And it applies to what adults choose to drink.
A thread runs through Professor Nutt’s work: people should be able to make decisions using evidence rather than assumption. That does not mean pretending psychoactive substances are harmless. Quite the opposite. His work has repeatedly tried to quantify both their risks and their benefits more accurately. It means understanding what something does, how it works and what its actual risks are—then allowing better policy, better medicine and better individual choices to follow.
That philosophy is directly relevant to SENTIA. The question is not simply: How do we remove alcohol? It is: Why do people drink in the first place? What need is alcohol serving? What happens in the brain when it works? And can science give people another option?
One of Professor Nutt’s central insights for SENTIA is that alcohol should not be dismissed as some historical mistake.
Humans have repeatedly used it because its chemistry can change the conditions in which social interaction happens.
At low doses, alcohol enhances GABA signalling. Professor Nutt and colleagues identify this GABAergic activity as an important part of the scientific explanation for alcohol’s early relaxing and sociability-promoting effects. GABA is the brain’s principal inhibitory neurotransmitter — part of the regulatory machinery that helps settle neural activity and determine which signals get through.
Alcohol then keeps going. That observation helped frame the GABA Labs research programme: instead of recreating alcohol molecule-for-molecule, investigate whether some of the socially useful biology could be approached more selectively. The first drink gave us the clue. GABA gave us the research question. SENTIA is where that question led.
