A nootropic is a substance studied for its relationship with cognitive functions such as memory, attention, learning or mental performance. 

The word was coined in the 1970s around early research into piracetam—a drug developed to treat involuntary muscle spasms—but it has since become a much broader category covering pharmaceuticals, nutrients, plant extracts and other compounds studied for cognitive effects. In everyday language, nootropics are often called “cognitive enhancers” or “smart drugs”, although those terms cover a very wide range of substances and levels of evidence

What do nootropics do? 

Cognition is not one thing. It includes:

  • learning  
  • executive function  
  • language  
  • perception  
  • processing information

Are all nootropics stimulants? 

No. Nootropics are a chemically diverse group. Scientific reviews classify cognitive enhancers by many different mechanisms, including interactions with enzymes, neurotransmitter systems and antioxidant pathways.
