The flower contains flavonoids—a large family of naturally occurring plant compounds—including apigenin, alongside aromatic terpenes—compounds that help give many plants their characteristic scent and flavour.
Chamomile’s GABA story is intriguing rather than simple. Apigenin has been shown experimentally to bind to a region of the GABA-A receptor also associated with benzodiazepines. This does not mean chamomile works like a benzodiazepine; it tells us that one of its compounds can interact with an interesting part of the GABA system. [2]
Research has also explored sesquiterpenes—a particular class of terpene compounds found in many aromatic plants— in relation to GABA biology.
