Is damiana an adaptogen? 

Damiana is sometimes discussed as an adaptogenic botanical. An adaptogen is a plant or plant compound studied for the way it may help the body respond to periods of increased physical or mental demand. 

A major review of the Turnera genus identified experimentally reported adaptogenic activity among its studied properties, although much of this evidence remains preclinical. [1] 

For that reason, it is more accurate to say that damiana has adaptogenic research behind it than to imply that every damiana preparation has a proven adaptogenic effect in humans. 

Is damiana a nootropic? 

Damiana is not one of the classic nootropics. 

Its research is broader and less developed than botanicals such as ginkgo or gotu kola. Studies and traditional use have focused more on mood, general CNS activity, vitality and sexual wellbeing than on clearly defined outcomes such as memory or attention.
