Passionflower — supports healthy sleep and provides resistance to stress.

What is passionflower?

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a climbing plant native to the Americas. Its aerial parts have a long history in European and North American herbal preparations, including traditional evening teas. SENTIA uses the aerial parts — the parts of the plant that grow above ground.

How does passionflower work?

Passionflower appears to interact with the GABA system in more than one way.

In laboratory research, Passiflora incarnata extract decreased GABA uptake—one of the processes by which GABA is removed from the space between nerve cells, meaning GABA remained in the system for longer. The extract also showed affinity for GABA-A and GABA-B receptors, meaning compounds inside it could bind to them. [2]

Why does SENTIA use passionflower?

Passionflower sits naturally inside SENTIA’s central idea: old botanical knowledge meeting modern neuroscience. Its traditional association with winding down is one part of the story. Research into its relationship with GABA gives us another.

Nature suggests the questions. Science investigates them.
